With everything from history lessons, art exhibits, festivals and performances, there is tons happening in Prince George’s County this February for Black History Month. Interested in learning about the history of Black Military service in the United States? Head to the “Fighting On Two Fronts” exhibit, open until February 26, at the Montpelier Arts Center in Laurel. Like historical films? Throughout the month is the Black History Film Festival at the Huntington Community Center in Bowie. Teens, come out on Feb. 15 to see Buffalo Soldiers (for ages 13-17). Learn about Musicology and the evolution of African American music up to present-day hip-hop at the Mount Rainier Nature & Recreation Center. This event, on Saturday February 16, is free for all ages from 1-3 p.m. Tour our nation’s capital and visit African American historical sites including the African American Civil War Museum and the Smithsonian for a afternoon of historical intrigue. Also free for all ages, the tour begins at the Bladensburg Community Center on Saturday, February 23. Finish the month’s events by attending a performance of the Jabali Acrobats, a performance group from Mombassa, Kenya that is a must-see. This performance is at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 28 at the Baden Community Center and promises to be exciting and fast-paced! The best part is, these are only a handful of events, tours and exhibits offered this month!
