Chesapeake Youth Corps Featured in National Park Service Newsletter
M-NCPPC’s very own Conservation Job Corps crew, who has been doing great work this summer on the Captain John Smith and Star-Spangled Banner national historical trails, was featured wonderfully in the latest issue of the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Newsletter. The article highlighted the work done by youth to not only help develop and maintain these trails but to foster leadership and employments skills, enjoy the outdoors and work together for a good cause! The article talks about students who worked to install a universally-accessible canoe/kayak dock at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park. The teens learned how to use tools and put them to good use working on a dock that could accommodate a variety of different disabilities, which they also learned about. Working on the Star-Spangled Banner trail, other teens learned how to use Geographic Information Systems technology to plot key trail points by GPS. They went all over the county and state to help set up the trail electronically. Teens in Virginia also worked to set up campsites in Caledon State Park and the staff was impressed with how hard the crew worked! Congratulations to all the teen volunteers and staff who worked together to make our area a better place!
