MDOT is responsible for building, operating and maintaining a safe and seamless transportation network that links Maryland with the rest of the country, and the world. MDOT directs and oversees the planning, construction and operation of Maryland's highway, transit, maritime and aviation facilities, as well as the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is a division of the Maryland Department of Transportation, and one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States. MTA operates Local and Commuter Buses, Metro Subway, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Train Service, and a comprehensive Paratransit (Mobility) system.

To connect communities in Prince George's and Montgomery counties, the Maryland Transit Administration is studying a new east-west high capacity transit line, the Purple Line would provide additional transportation capacity in the congested corridor between New Carrollton and Bethesda; provide faster, more reliable connections between existing Metro, MARC and Amtrak stations; and support economic development in both counties.

For more than 50 years, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, known as COG, has helped develop regional solutions to such issues as the environment, affordable housing, growth and development, public health, child welfare, public safety, homeland security, and transportation.
