Not Your Typical Thursday Night: Xtreme Teens Rock the Boat in D.C.

“Look at that view!” said 17-year-old Montel Sewell to his date, 16-year-old Diamond Bullock as the two relaxed atop the Spirit of Mount Vernon, a Washington D.C. dinner cruise ship. The two teenagers agreed that this night out was one of a kind, not a typical Thursday night.
When Prince George’s County’s Xtreme Teens hosted Rock the Boat, one of its biggest events of the summer, on July 21, teens from throughout the county had the unique opportunity to take a luxurious dinner cruise with over 200 of their peers.
The event included dinner and dancing, with a DJ on each of the two indoor floors playing dance music. The teens also had access to the upper deck of the boat, where they could enjoy the sights of D.C. from the vantage point of the Potomac River.
“We didn’t think there would be so many people,” said Bullock, adding that the cruise offered the opportunity to get out and meet other Prince George’s teens.
While many teens attend Rock the Boat every summer, for some, Thursday’s cruise was a first.
“This cruise is what pictures look like,” said friends Daniel Bernard, 13, and Trey Rane, 14, as they wondered how so many tables, chairs and people could fit onto one boat.
For 15-year-old Joseph Gleaton, the event marked his first time on a boat. “Being on the water… it’s better than just looking at it,” he said.
