Step Back in Time by Visiting a Historical Site or Museum
Do you like history? Learning about the people, places and events that shaped our world is fascinating and there are many important historical places right here in our backyard! Prince George’s County, neighboring our nation’s capital, is central to many different events in history, such as the start of aviation, the War of 1812, the Civil Rights Movement and much more! There are many historical sites and museums around the county that are open to the public and some offer special events that help you get an even better look into the past. Travel as far back as the time dinosaurs roamed the county by heading to the Dinosaur Park in Laurel. Home of Astrodon Johnstoni, Maryland’s state dinosaur, the park features fossils from 110 million years ago! Step back into the 1800s by visiting Riversdale House Museum in Riverdale to learn about manor houses or learn about farm houses in that time by visiting the Surratt House Museum in Clinton. The Riversdale Park House Museum will be hosting a historical “whodunit” on Saturday, February 9 at 6:30 p.m. and is the perfect opportunity for all hoping to be detective for a day. Visit the world’s first airport and the location of Wilbur Wright’s flight training facilities at the College Park Aviation Museum. The museum has plenty of hands-on attractions and visitors can even hop in a plane and pretend to soar the skies! The Bladensburg Waterfront Park is the site of one of the most important (though not the most successful) battles of the War of 1812. Visit the Battle of Bladensburg Visitor’s center there to learn more about the battle right in Prince George’s County. There are numerous other historical sites for all your interests, so get out and explore the history behind your county, you may be surprised at what you find Xtreme Teens!
