Get Fit With the Family Health Challenge
For many of us, we know the many benefits of living an active, healthy lifestyle. It makes us feel happier and healthier and can help in almost every aspect! But, sometimes, it’s hard to do, especially with today’s busy schedules. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is encouraging Prince George’s County residents to take on the Family Health Challenge, knowing there is definitely strength in numbers when it comes to staying fit! Throughout September, each week is dedicated to a specific health challenge in order to keep the entire family healthy and happy. The first week, September 2-8, focused on “Less Screen” or cutting back on time in front of the TV, computer or video games. The second week, September 9-15, is called “More Green,” and encourages families to take their workouts and adventures outside, in the green! The benefits include cleaner air, no membership fees and, of course, Vitamin D. This doesn’t even have to just be set exercises, according to the Health Challenge website, and can be raking leaves, for example. Week two asks for 30 minutes of activity outside a day. The third week, September 16-22, is “Sugar Less,” week, cutting back on unhealthy foods with lots of sugar. “More Fresh” week, the final week spanning from September 23-29, encourages families to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Farmer’s markets throughout the county are a great place to find these healthy treats as well! Getting fit and healthy can be fun, especially if you are all in it together.
