Men of Alpha Phi Alpha reach out to Prince George
For 7 hours on Saturday, March 17, a group of teenage boys got to hang with the frat guys of Alpha Phi Alpha at Stephen Decatur Community Center in Clinton. However this group did more than just hang out. Through Project Alpha, the the college students of this fraternity visit teenage males from Prince George’s County and teach them important lessons about being a man. At this session, the group discussed the importance of responsibility in relationships, including the issues of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. “It’s definitely a positive experience” for the boys, said a staff member at Stephen Decatur, who has watched the program evolve over its four-year existence. “They learn a lot.” Project Alpha takes place about three or four times each year, and most events attract a large turnout. The College Fair Alpha hosted in October brought in more than 700 participants. Some other topics they cover are giving back to the community and maintaining fitness. By using film presentations and guest experts, the fraternity brothers can keep the young men engaged in these important topics. Because the Alphas are young men themselves, the message may come in clearer for the teenage boys they influence.
