Did you know that between the hours of 3-7pm 192,737 (21%) of Maryland school-age children are alone and unsupervised? Are you aware that most violent crimes committed by high school students occur immediately following the end of the school day?
“Attendance, Behavior and Coursework are three key indicators of whether a middle school student will likely graduate from high school. An analysis of 68 afterschool studies found that participants in high‐ quality afterschool programs go to school more, behave better, receive better grades and perform better on test compared to students who don’t participate in afterschool programs.” (Afterschool Alliance, 2015)
It is proven that afterschool programs not only assist working parents in keeping youth safe but youth are able to enjoy programs where they have the opportunity to learn new things in a supportive environment.
Afterschool programs ultimately, increase attendance in school, class participation as well as strengthen team building skills.
Youth who participate in afterschool programs are also able to learn about exciting recreational adventures, get involved with leadership and volunteer opportunities. There is no limit to the amount of knowledge, fun, and opportunities available to youth afterschool.
The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission offers Xtreme Afterschool on the weekdays as well as the Xtreme Teens program on Friday and Saturday nights at several community centers throughout Prince Georges County Maryland. Go to
