Open House Xplosion displays endless opportunities
Friday, October 14 meant roller-skating at Rollingcrest-Chillum, Olympics at Oakcrest, smoothie blending at Bowie, and Gender Benders at Glassmanor, as community centers in Prince George’s County showed everything they have to offer for the 2011 Xtreme Teens Open House Xplosion. The event served not only as a way to showcase activities available to preteens and teens, but as a way for parents and teens to get to know the staff responsible for all of the fun. Good Luck Community Center introduced its staff with a game of “Who Dat?” in which community center attendees were given the challenge of naming each staff member and describing him or her with one characteristic. At Kentland Community Center, teens and parents were also able to see one of the specialists responsible for coordinating the youth programs, as Adriane Clutter came to introduce some of the newest Xtreme Teens opportunities. Through interacting with the teens in activities, staff members were able to demonstrate their investment in their centers. “I enjoy working with young folks,” said Kentland staff member Clayton Deskins, expressing an attitude similar to that of many community center and Xtreme Teens staff. “I have a lot of fun here.” The open houses also highlighted youth opportunities outside the community center, from field trips and service projects to job opportunities. With unique activities at each center, all sorts of teens and families were able to join in on the fun.
