A Chance to Unwind: William Wirt offers many options for fun
At William Wirt Middle School in Riverdale, Md., there is always something going on… well at least Monday through Saturday. “One of the girls said to me last week ‘man I hate Sundays! I’m always so bored,’ because she’s not here,” said William Wirt Safe Summer staff member Sophie Shiaris. As a Safe Summer site, the middle school’s gym, and several of its portable classrooms are kept open from 10 p.m. to midnight, so that teens can enjoy some extra time with their peers, under the supervision of Safe Summer staff. However, supervision is not all that they provide. Every night there is basketball, but there often are a variety of other activities available including skating, movies, video games, board games, music lessons, and water balloon fights. William Wirt is also a summer teen center during the day, but having Safe Summer hours makes it possible for teens that are busy during the day, like 17-year-old Ibrahim Bangura, to join in on the fun. “It makes everybody get some stress out,” said Bangura, who attends summer school during the day and said that Safe Summer gives him the chance to unwind.
