Batter Up! Bladensburg offers first baseball camp in county
Children attending baseball camp at Bladensburg Community Center may not have known it, but they were a part of a historical landmark event. Ok, so it may not make the history books, but this year’s baseball camp in Bladensburg was the first baseball camp ever in Prince George’s County. The camp enrolled 10 boys, and is expected to grow over the years. “There’s a lot of basketball around here,” said the community center’s director Jeremy Weiss, speaking about sports in Prince George’s County. “We want to keep basketball, but introduce some other things too.” While baseball was the focus of the camp, campers also had the opportunity to play dodgeball and soccer, learn about fitness and play ping pong and Wii baseball inside during the hottest hours of the day. As 11-year-old camper Durand Ford put it, there was “a whole bunch of stuff to do.” Aside from the basic skills and rules of baseball, camp director Antonio Williams said he aims to teach campers the importance of exercise and physical training, as well as teamwork. “All of them want the ball. Now they realize it [isn’t] their ball, it’s everybody’s.”
