Teens Prepare For The Future at the Workforce Readiness Training Program
It was all about the future at this year's Workforce Readiness Training program, a week-long program designed to prepare teens for their desired career field. Run by the M-NCPPC in conjunction with Pepco, around 30 students (most recent high school graduates) were chosen for the program, which runs from June 17-21. Participants went on a number of different field trips, including to the Pepco plant in Rockville, and attended different workshops on topics such as job interviews, resumes, social media, careers and more. On the first day, at Prince George's Community College, teens learned the do's and dont's of resumes, seeing good and bad examples. They next made their own resumes and traded them with one another to critique them. On the next day, after visiting the Rockville Pepco plant, teens went to the PGC building to hear from M-NCPPC employees about how they got their jobs and if there are job opportunities available in their respective departments. They heard from representatives from Public Affairs and Marketing, Aquatics and Sports Facilities, Natural Historical Resources, Park Police, the Arts and Cultural Department and much more. The employees were sharing their advice for the future and Deputy Director of Area Operations Debbie Tyner had some great advice. "Education and recreation go hand in hand," she said, and that's what this week is all about. Teens got a great opportunity to learn about the workforce to help prepare themselves for their future careers, to be the best they can be!
