Learn About the Importance of Water Safety for National Water Safety Month
Spring is in full force and summer is fast approaching, and there's no better way to cool off and enjoy the weather than taking a dip in our local pools and aquatic facilities. In preparation for the season, May is National Water Safety Month and Prince George's County is hosting many events and lessons to help you enjoy the water in a safe and fun manner! This Friday, at the fun Rollingcrest Chillum Splash Pool, there's free introductory swim or advance swim classes from 7:30-9 p.m. This is designed just for you Xtreme Teens, you can learn how to enhance your skills to become an advanced swimmer or take advantage of free beginner classes. The importance of pool safety will be covered and you can even look into how to become a lifeguard at an area pool! If you can't make this event, on Sundays May 19 and 26, there are free beginner classes at the Fairland Sports and Aquatics Complex from 4-5 p.m. These classes are for those ages 6 and up, so encourage your siblings or parents to join a class if they want to learn! Call 301-362-6060 to register for this event. On Saturday, May 25, at many area aquatic facilities, from noon-7 p.m., there will be free pool safety giveaways and information. You can get a quick refresher about how to be safe in and around water and get some free stuff! Also on the same day, from 1-3 p.m. at the Theresa Banks Memorial Aquatic Facility, the American Red Cross is hosting the free "Do Your Part, Be Water Smart" day for preteens ages 6-13. You will learn safety skills from a video then practice them on the pool deck. At the end of the day, those who complete the training get a certificate showing they are safe in and near the water and can help teach others.
