Meet Our Teaching Artists: Shannan Johnson
Meet Shannan Johnson, one of our Arts on a Roll instructors. She's been with the mobile arts program for two years and teaches step and hip-hop dance to students of all ages.

1) What’s your background, education, and training like?

Shannah: I am a native of Houston, TX. My training is untraditional. I learned all dance forms through public education. My schools from elementary through high school offered art and sports that enhanced my skills. I received my undergraduate degrees in English and Journalism and my MFA in Film Writing. If you can't tell, it was my intention to write. However, my love for the performing arts was still alive in me. I eventually quit my job as a Junior Creative Executive at the Syfy Channel to audition for a full-time dance company, Step Afrika! Joining the company is what brought me to the East coast and back to the stage. I haven't left since.

2) What was your first experience with dance?

S: My first experience with dance was ballet at four years old. I don't have a huge memory of this time but I do remember my teal leotard with silver sequins. I loved it and didn't want to take it off. My most clear memory of dance is beginning gymnastics at age six. Gymnastics was my first love and is where I learned most of my foundational skills.

3) What can dance add to the life of a person, be they a child or adult?

S: Dance adds to confidence. I found myself on the stage. People of all ages can learn to let go and literally live through dance. It is an open space for anyone to develop skills on and off the stage. Not only can you learn pointed toes and pirouettes but, you can learn leadership and teamwork.

4) What was one of the most satisfying experiences you’ve had working with Arts on a Roll?

S: I enjoy engaging with students at the numerous summer camps. Though I am only there for an hour on a one-time basis, the children are so touched by dance. They are so well behaved and willing to learn. Arts on a Roll has also opened a lot of doors for me to work with different parts of the MNCPP Arts Program. So, I also enjoy diversifying my skills and having the opportunity to work with students of all ages in other art forms.
