Xtreme Teens Go Out and Clean Up
Spending time outside seems like a fun way to use the day for many Xtreme Teens, and for some, this type of fun was combined with community service, thanks to the recognition of Earth Day this April. The day dedicated to the environment was April 22, however many organizations celebrate all month long, like the Anacostia Watershed Society. Xtreme Teens Earth Day events stretched from April 21 to 28 for 2012. On April 21, teens volunteered with the Anacostia Watershed Society to help clean up the natural areas at Bladensburg Waterfront Park. For some teens, the opportunity was eye-opening, like Gabrielle Sherrod and Roland Iwunze, who both said they enjoyed the day of service. “If you don’t help the community you live in, everything goes to waste,” said Sherrod. Jim Connolly, a board member of the Anacostia Watershed Society, said that many of the teen volunteers are reluctant at first, but end up finding the activity to be fun and rewarding. “They need to do community service, and we need volunteers, so it’s a beautiful match,” said Connolly. Other Xtreme Teens Earth Day events included a service project and music festival at Duvall Field in College Park and an educational service event called “Celebrating Mother Earth” at Potomac Landing Community Center.
