Be My Valentine
Teens all over Prince George's County celebrated Valentine's Day with events in the Southern, Central and Northern areas. Dances and parties were held at several community centers, while in the Central region, Largo/Kettering/Perrywood Community Center gave the celebration a new spin by creating a "My Bloody Valentine" haunted house. At Adelphi Mill, preteens from all over the northern area got together to celebrate with a night of dance. According to Dana Hill, while this is an annual event, 2012 is the first year such a program was targeted toward preteens, and this target was a success. Preteens raved about the decorations, music, setting and crowd. "I listen to this music all the time," said 11-year-old Daniel Gutierrez, talking about the DJ's choices of songs to play. Daniel was not alone in this, as a big group cheer was heard each time another hit song was played. While many of these preteens get to enjoy school dances, what made this Xtreme Teens event different was the mixture of youth from various places. "It's a lot of fun with your friends, and you can meet new people from different schools," said 12-year-old Asia Prather. For those who missed out on the love in the Prince George's air before Valentine's Day, one chance remained to celebrate after the holiday, with a party at Marlow Heights Community Center Feb. 17.
