Fun Times for All: Charles Herbert Flowers Safe Summer attracts diverse ages
One might think that the extra-large gymnasium at Charles Herbert Flowers High School would have almost too much room for the typical program taking place from 10 p.m. to midnight. However, this is simply not the case. While there is more than enough space for everyone, this Safe Summer gym is far from empty on a Tuesday night. With a typical crowd of 115 to 120, CHF High School offers basketball with six separate hoops, as well as Wii and Playstation 3 for the gaming crowd. Kanika Richardson, who has worked at this site for three years, said that the program is unique in the way it attracts a group with such diversity in age. Most of the participants are teens and young adults, however some bring younger siblings or relatives as well. “The teens are really good with the kids,” said Richardson, including them in their games and sports. The attendees do not only get along with each other, but with the staff as well, crediting them for the good time. “Once you get to know them, they become your friends too,” said Bradley Henry, a 19-year-old Safe Summer frequenter.
