Taking Steps: The STRIVE Step Showcase and Corey Chubbs
The evening of January 18, 2014 at The Publick Playhouse in Cheverly saw not only a parking lot full of cars, but a playhouse full of energy and enthusiasm for staying healthy, as youth of all ages took the stage and stepped into the spotlights. The STRIVE Step Showcase featured groups of young people from local community centers and colleges alike who all got to show off their talents at stepping to promote healthy living. Some groups spoke about the benefits of eating and maintaining a healthy diet, and others, like the brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., spread the words of brotherhood and staying fit. All of the groups used a combination of their own choreography and, at some points, famous hip hop songs to make a music all their own that electrified the crowd.

Among the extremely gifted pre-teens, teens, and young adults on stage was a 21-year-old by the name of Corey Chubbs, who has been involved with the Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation department since he was five years old. He has taken part in activities and sports with PG Parks & Rec. through numerous sports, starting with basketball, he said. Over the years, he has also played flag football, as well as football and baseball in high school, and now that he is a junior at Bowie State University, Chubbs has found yet even more ways to stay active.

“Now I’m in my fraternity…we play basketball on the weekends, we have football tournaments. I try to lift weights a little bit, and just try to stay healthy. You know, as you grow older, health becomes very important. You have to take time to care about yourself, your family, your friends and your schoolwork,” he said.

For those of you who want to see more amazing teenage step groups get down, be sure to come out to the Publick Playhouse on February 1, 2014 for the fifth annual Black History Month high school step show challenge called “Zawadi: The Gift of Stepping: A Labor of Love.”
