The Essential Theatre
Position Announcement
Washington, DC Based Visual Arts Curator/Consultant
Position duration: Part-Time Temporary/Project Based

The Essential Theatre is currently seeking a Washington, DC based visual arts curator to serve as primary project contact and manager to coordinate a visual arts exhibit dedicated to the work or work centered on themes consistent with the work of prolific Author, Poet and Playwright, James Baldwin. The work of the proposed exhibit end of February thru mid April will serve to deepen a planned humanities component of a scheduled theatre piece during April of 2016. This position will report directly to the Artistic Director. The general responsibilities are as follows:
Will have responsibility for curating collection of artifacts or works of art specific to overarching purpose;
• Soliciting and acquiring objects or collections of interest to the proposed
showing;
• cataloguing acquisitions and keeping records;
• carrying out any assigned or best practiced background research and writing any necessary catalogues;
• displaying objects or collections in way that makes them accessible and engaging to the general public;
• writing necessary materials and articles for the website;
• writing necessary articles for internal and external publications;
• planning, organizing, interpreting and presenting exhibitions and lectures;
• collection documentation and management;
• collaborating with other partnering departments, such as education, fundraising, marketing and conservation;
• writing any bids;
• negotiating loan items and external loans;
• handling enquiries from researchers and the public;
• dealing with and understanding computer-generated imagery and website software as part of enhancing the visitor experience and interaction;
• budget planning, forecasting and reporting;
• Supervising any assigned staff or interns as part of training and development;
• dealing with enquiries from clients and stakeholders;
• liaising with voluntary groups, the community and industry (including schools, local history and other community groups), as well as grant agencies from which secured sponsorships for events or publications may have derived;
• networking with other museum and art gallery professionals and outside agencies.
• All other jobs consistent with position as reasonably assigned.
Ideal candidate should possess at least a Bachelors degree specific to field and 5 years of solid, verifiable experience or a Masters Degree and 3 years of solid, verifiable experience. Must be able to multi task, well organized, computer literate and have excellent
people, oral and written communication skills.

celebrates America's rich, diverse cultural landscape.
