The Greenbelt Recreation Department Arts Program invites guests of all ages to attend a free Community Art Drop-In workshop on Sunday, May 7, from 1-3pm. Make beautiful paper flowers with Artist in Residence Sherill Gross and contribute to a collaborative “hanging garden”. A variety of techniques will be introduced, suitable for different age and skill levels. This program takes place in room 113 at the Greenbelt Community Center located at 15 Crescent Road in Greenbelt, Maryland. All materials will be provided. No reservations are needed.
While visiting, take in the new exhibition at the Greenbelt Community Center Art Gallery (room 112): Vision Quest - Paintings and Collage by Janet Mathias. Drawing inspiration from Mexican folk art, Spanish colonial art and ceremonial masks, Mathias creates unique pictorial worlds populated by animal spirits and other curious characters. Use your imagination to create a story!
Also visit the Greenbelt Museum’s current exhibit The Knowing Hands that Carve This Stone: The New Deal Art of Lenore Thomas Straus. Straus is best known locally as the creator of the iconic Mother and Child statue in Greenbelt’s Roosevelt Center and the impressive bas reliefs on the façade of the Greenbelt Community Center.
