Meet Our Teaching Artists: Allison Stewart
Meet Allison Stewart, one of our Arts on a Roll instructors. She teaches music and theatre, having found her way to Arts on a Roll through working with our touring teen theatre companies.

1) What's your background and what was your training like?

Allison: I am a Baltimore native who has always loved music and drama. I got informal training while singing in church choirs and when I went to college in Pennsylvania I took voice lessons and declared music as my major. I continued my studies in Audio Engineering in Tennessee. My training in PA helped me to gain knowledge and begin to lay the foundation to be a lifelong singer. After graduation, I took more classes in acting and decided to move to TN to continue my education. While in TN, I learned a lot about preparation and how to harness the skills I learned in undergrad.

2) What was your first experience playing music?

A: I began singing in church at a very young age and still sing with my choir. I took piano lessons for many years, starting at the age of 5.

3) What can creating music add to the life of a person, be they a child or adult?

A: Creating music allows your creativity to come alive like no other form of media. Music involves theory, knowledge of notes and chords, and most importantly, emotion. Music allows memories to be created and retrieved, speaks in melodic and impactful ways, and can heal . I can't imagine my life without music.

4) What was one of the most satisfying experiences you’ve had working with Arts on a Roll?

A: I enjoy allowing the children to create their own songs and chants using their talents. I encourage dancers to dance and singers to sing. It's always fun to see where their creativity leads them!
